Seventeen-year-old Audrey Rose Wadsworth was born a lord’s daughter, with a life of wealth and privilege stretched out before her. But between the social teas and silk dress fittings, she leads a forbidden secret life.
Against her stern father’s wishes and society’s expectations, Audrey often slips away to her uncle’s laboratory to study the gruesome practice of forensic medicine. When her work on a string of savagely killed corpses drags Audrey into the investigation of a serial murderer, her search for answers brings her close to her own sheltered world.
The story’s shocking twists and turns, augmented with real, sinister period photos, will make this #1 New York Times bestselling debut from author Kerri Maniscalco impossible to forget.
I am absolutely in love with this book. It’s grotesque, extremely detailed, dark, and yet extremely fun to read!
This is so much my type of book! I LOVE books that are dark like this and yet somehow light enough to read all at once, and this is exactly that! This book had me gripped from the very start! I had high expectations for it and it didn’t disappoint! The story is so well constructed and fascinating! Also, it might have helped all the sassiness in it… It’s glorious!
This book, just like the title says, is about Jack the Ripper’s murders while they are occurring. The author gives it an extremely believable story, with amazing characters that will definitely make way into your heart, just like they did to mine, all the things are interconnected in one way or another. Plus, the way it’s written is just so easy to read, even with all the gruesome parts! Of course, for me, that’s easy to say since I enjoy them a lot, but I do understand this book might not be for everyone because of that… I would still give it a try tho, since that starts right at the beginning anyway!
The first thing I need to talk about this books is the characters so…
Meet the characters: *amazing art from PhantomRin*
These are our amazing main characters. Thomas Cresswell and Audrey Rose Wadsworth. This art just fits so well with the description! I love it!
Cresswell is AMAZING! He is so charming and intelligent! He is everything, okay?! He thinks a woman is as capable as a man, he gives importance not only to looks but also brain cells, which I don’t find often enough in the books I read, at least not this way. He is absolutely gorgeous and he knows it! He plays with it, he knows what he is capable of, he would go to the ends of the earth for Audrey Rose, he is always teasing her and it made my heart swell. Ahh! If only you were real… I just don’t have enough words to describe how perfect he is.
Audrey Rose is as amazing as he is! She is extremely intelligent (although sometimes her brain seems to stop…), she defies the rules, she believes women should have the same rights, she is a scientist working at her uncle’s laboratory and yet she loves fashion and she doesn’t see why one should be able to have both, which I totally agree! She is more emotional than Cresswell, which made them even cuter! I loved how strong she was and yet she has a soft and rightful heart. She is badass in a way you don’t see much! Plus the romance between them was so subtle and exciting! My heart melts!! As for the rest… The uncle I found fascinating in a very interesting and unsettling way. The father I pitied and yet I felt very infuriated by him. The brother I couldn’t help but like him, and Audrey Rose’s cousin I loved!! There are so many good characters in this book and so much happening with them!
The plot is extremely fascinating. It has a lot of science, anatomy, research, blood, death, diseases, a fiery relationship, family problems, everything you can imagine. Plus it has occasionally some photos of the time back then, which I thought complemented the book really well.
This book had a lot of twists and thrilling moments but I was already expecting the end. Although I still loved it and felt enthralled by it, it was easy to see what was coming, but I can’t help but love everything about this book!
The writing really made this book amazing and I can’t wait for the next installment! The end made so much sense and it was so emotional! Yes, I did cry at the end, which it might seem weird since this doesn’t seem the type of book one would cry for. But I couldn’t help it! I loved it and it made me even more excited for Hunting Prince Dracula! Definitely, recommend this one! If you are okay with gruesome and dark novels, this is the book for you!
