Natsuru Nanao, a 6th grader who lives alone with his mother, strikes up an unlikely friendship with the reserved and driven Rio Suzumura. Natsuru plays hookey from soccer camp that summer, and instead of telling the truth to his mother, he spends all his time with Rio and her kid brother at their rickety house, where a dark secret threatens to upend their fragile happiness.
I love this type of manga books. They are just so sweet and emotional!
The Gods Lie is about Rio Suzumura. She is a 6th grader that lives alone with her little brother in a house that is as fragile as their situation. She has to do all the chores at home, plus keep their situation a secret. Their mom left and their father is a fisherman working in Alaska.
But one day, Natsuru – our main character – finds out and befriends them. During summer time, instead of going to a soccer summer camp, like he is supposed to, he spends all his time with Rio and her little brother.
I really loved how their friendship evolved, how emotional the story was and to see Natsuru’s emotions unfold. He is an amazing kid and I loved how he protected them. Rio is the strongest girl I’ve seen in a manga book so far and it’s impossible not to care about her. She loves her little brother and does everything for them.
The art is also beautiful! It’s really expressive and delicate and I love the style. I also loved the happy vibe that it had in some parts. They were so alive…
This book was for sure an emotional trip… My only complaint is that I wished it was longer… I wanted to know more, to see how their lives were going to unfold. To see their friendship grow and her life getting better. I think it would have been even more emotional to see more about them. But this was nonetheless an amazing manga and I would definitely recommend it!
