Enter the Wundrous world of Morrigan Crow and Nevermoor – the most fantastical children’s release of the year.Morrigan Crow is cursed. Having been born on Eventide, the unluckiest day for any child to be born, she’s blamed for all local misfortunes, from hailstorms to heart attacks – and, worst of all, the curse means that Morrigan is doomed to die at midnight on her eleventh birthday. But as Morrigan awaits her fate, a strange and remarkable man named Jupiter North appears.
Chased by black-smoke hounds and shadowy hunters on horseback, he whisks her away into the safety of a secret, magical city called Nevermoor. It’s then that Morrigan discovers Jupiter has chosen her to contend for a place in the city’s most prestigious organisation: the Wundrous Society.
In order to join, she must compete in four difficult and dangerous trials against hundreds of other children, each boasting an extraordinary talent that sets them apart – an extraordinary talent that Morrigan insists she does not have. To stay in the safety of Nevermoor for good, Morrigan will need to find a way to pass the tests – or she’ll have to leave the city and confront her deadly fate once and for all.
Perfect for fans of the Harry Potter series and His Dark Materials, this series takes readers into an extraordinary world, setting hope and imagination alive.
I initially bought this book because of the cover. Behind the dustjacket, this book is completely and utterly gorgeous and I just needed to have it. I obviously intended to read it, but for sure I didn’t expect to grab it as soon as I did. Middle grade is just not something I read that often, but I was in a reading slump and I was reading the beginning of many books until I found some that would feel simple enough to dive in. And this one was the one gripping enough.
Morrigan Crow is cursed, and so, she was born to die on her eleventh birthday. But before that happens, she is recruited by Captain Jupiter North – who illegally smuggles her into an amazing world called Nevermoor – to be a candidate for the Wunderous Society. But for that to happen, she needs to pass some challenging and mysterious trials that will determine if she is special enough to belong to the elite. The only problem is that everyone is supposed to have a certain talent, something special that separates them from the others and she is pretty sure she doesn’t have any… Will she beat the odds? She is just one of almost 500 candidates…
I’m so happy I read this book! I absolutely LOVED it! Everything about this book was amazing. The pace was perfect, surprising, full of twists and anticipation, and I couldn’t take my eyes off it. Every detail, every loose end, was unexpected – even the ones I wasn’t thinking of! The world is mesmerizing, vivid and written in a way that made me want it to be real more than anything… It just felt so real! *fingers crossed for a movie coming up*
This book had literally everything I could have hoped for. Here are some of the most notorious things in it: there’s a giant talking cat, witches, dragons, and a vampire dwarf… There’s magic, friendship, darkness, amazing characters, suspense, excitement… EVERYTHING! And best of all, a hotel that changes and evolves by itself, according to the resident’s needs and desires. This world is fantastic and I can’t wait to unravel it more and more!
But if there’s something that really made it go all the way to my favorites is how unpredictable it is. When something happened my thought was always “how the hell did I not see that coming?!” It just kept surprising me and it was SO gripping! I can’t even express how much I loved this book, and to think I always distance myself from middle grade!
*The only thing is that it does not have a map and I really wanted one! I hope the next one has… It would be so cool!!*
But really, if you like adventure, magic, and amazing worlds and awesome characters, read this! It’s so worth it!! My review is more a ramble of emotions and excitement than it is a review, but I hope it picked up your interest because I HIGHLY recommend it!
