In the magical underworld of Victorian London, Tessa Gray has at last found safety with the Shadowhunters. But that safety proves fleeting when rogue forces in the Clave plot to see her protector, Charlotte, replaced as head of the Institute. If Charlotte loses her position, Tessa will be out on the street—and easy prey for the mysterious Magister, who wants to use Tessa’s powers for his own dark ends.
With the help of the handsome, self-destructive Will and the fiercely devoted Jem, Tessa discovers that the Magister’s war on the Shadowhunters is deeply personal. He blames them for a long-ago tragedy that shattered his life. To unravel the secrets of the past, the trio journeys from mist-shrouded Yorkshire to a manor house that holds untold horrors, from the slums of London to an enchanted ballroom where Tessa discovers that the truth of her parentage is more sinister than she had imagined. When they encounter a clockwork demon bearing a warning for Will, they realize that the Magister himself knows their every move—and that one of their own has betrayed them.
Tessa finds her heart drawn more and more to Jem, but her longing for Will, despite his dark moods, continues to unsettle her. But something is changing in Will—the wall he has built around himself is crumbling. Could finding the Magister free Will from his secrets and give Tessa the answers about who she is and what she was born to do?
As their dangerous search for the Magister and the truth leads the friends into peril, Tessa learns that when love and lies are mixed, they can corrupt even the purest heart.
This one was quite different from the first one… I wasn’t expecting it but I quite liked it!
This was quite an intense book, especially emotionally. It doesn’t have as much action as the first book, but it compensates in other fronts. We got to know some characters a lot better, a lot of their secrets and personalities; we got more romance, which although isn’t my gem, I was quite invested in it; and we got some really amazing and exciting moments even tho it was a slower book.
The love triangle is quite interesting in terms that I love all the characters. It’s just so difficult to choose one of them! Although I would expect better of Tessa than jumping around… I’ve loved Jem since the first book, but Will has been definitely growing on me, especially because we learn a lot about him in this book! They are just both so amazing in such different ways!! I’ve never been so invested in a love triangle before! As in, I’m rooting for the three of them…?
I loved seeing more of Magnus, he is always a plus for me and I really liked his part in this book. We didn’t get as much downworlders, neither did we get to know much more about Tessa’s gift, but we did get a bigger perspective on the shadowhunters, their lives, and the clave. Although I must say, this book made me even more curious about Tessa!
This book had amazing twists that I didn’t see at all coming. They just popped up and left me open-mouthed… The first one had some but his one had a LOT of those moments, which compensated for the pace being a lot slower than I’m normally used to in a sequel.
I don’t want to say too much more about this book, mainly because, since there’s not a lot of action, there’s a lot of details and smaller things happening – that I believe will be quite important – and I don’t want to reveal them. But it was quite amazing and it made me incredibly excited for the sequel! I can’t imagine the end of this series… I don’t even want it to end, how is it even possible?!
So far this trilogy is 50 times better than TMI. I prefer these characters, this plot and even the writing for some reason feels different, or maybe it’s just because I’m more invested in these books, I don’t know… But I would definitely recommend them!
