When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something frightening enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that got her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that had killed most of America’s children, but she and the others emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they could not control.

Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones. When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. She is on the run, desperate to find the only safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of kids who have escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents. When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at having a life worth living.

Captura de ecrã 2017-06-30, às 18.09.21This was SO good! I didn’t have very high expectations, but this blew me away… It was gripping and unique from the very first page and I really didn’t want it to end! (But at least I can read the rest of the series ASAP so… That’s a good thing).

In this world, a plague is spreading and killing most of the kids, and making the ones that survive have certain powers. That makes most of the adults fear them and send them away, but that’s not exactly what happened to our MC, Ruby. She was ten years old when her powers appeared and she was sent to Thurmond, which is supposed to be a “rehabilitation” center. She doesn’t know yet the extent of her power, but she knows enough to keep it hidden until that’s not an option anymore, and she has to run for her life.

I absolutely loved the idea of the world, mainly because it’s to an extent realistically possible. It’s a hateful and dangerous world, which really captivated and made me care for the characters. Which by the way, are awesome!

We have 4 main characters – Ruby, Liam, Chubs, and Zu – and to be completely honest I loved every single one of them. They are completely different from each other, but I loved their dynamics as a group. Liam is an incredibly sweet person, always caring for others; Chubs is a socially awkward person, that deep down is a softy; Zu is the sweetest brightest little kid ever; and Ruby is a soft-hearted and slightly naive person, that grows tons in this book! I loved how much more confident and strong she got!

As for the powers, there are five types organized by color – green, blue, yellow, orange and red. I tend to love books that contain either magic or special powers and this one did not disappoint! It was so amazing to see them in action! I ABSOLUTELY loved it!

That end tho… Killed me! It was so dark and unexpected! It broke my heart and I need to know what happens next! I’m so excited for the next book!
