Hi guys! I haven’t done manga reviews in quite a long time, but I’ve recently gotten 3 new manga books that I’ve never tried before but wanted to, so, I decided to do a first impressions on them in one post!

These ones are the three mangas I recently got and read in order:

Tokyo Ghoul, Vol.1 by Sui Ishida

Black Butler, Vol.1 by Yana Toboso

The Ancient Magus’ Bride, Vol.1 by Kore Yamazaki

Like I said, I’ve heard of these books for quite some time and always wanted to get to them, but this is the first time I actually read them. As for my predictions on what I was going to like the most, I was completely wrong!

Shy Ken Kaneki is thrilled to go on a date with the beautiful Rize. But it turns out that she’s only interested in his body—eating it, that is. When a morally questionable rescue transforms him into the first half-human half-Ghoul hybrid, Ken is drawn into the dark and violent world of Ghouls, which exists alongside our own.

So basically this is the story of Kaneki. In a world where ghouls exist, he was just a normal young boy. Until he was accidentally turned into the first ghoul hybrid.

I really enjoyed seeing his struggle, accepting the change that made his life completely upside down, and how that led to making it difficult for him to fit in anywhere now.

It was also interesting seeing how dark and horrifying the world was. It’s for sure creepy and with A LOT of gruesome moments in it too. The art is quite wild and dark, and to be honest, perfect for the story.

Overall it was a VERY dark manga, full of morally questionable characters and I can’t say I’m not excited to see where this is going…

In the Victorian ages of London The Earl of the Phantomhive house, Ciel Phantomhive, needs to get his revenge on those who had humiliated him and destroyed what he loved. Not being able to do it alone he sells his soul to a demon he names Sebastian Michaelis. Now working as his butler, Sebastian must help the Earl Phantomhive in this suspenseful, exciting, thriller manga.

Well, this was… unique? It was for sure fun and surprising and I can totally see myself grabbing some more.

So, in this manga, we get to know Ciel, a kid who inherited his title and job as the Queen’s dog from his deceased father. But for a kid, his life is way more complicated than it should be. He has to balance his life between being head of a house and his duties in the underworld… So to help him, he has Sebastian (aka the awesomest* of butlers)! Sebastian can do EVERYTHING. He is incredible and he just might be a bit too perfect to be real… His duties are far bigger than just being a butler and it’s incredibly exciting to see him work!

It’s quite a fast-paced and exciting manga and it does have a darker side which I quite enjoyed. Plus that end… Holy shit, that was awesome! It made me super excited to see what is to come!

Enter the Magician’s Apprentice

Her name is Chise Hatori, a penniless orphan troubled by visions. Sold as a slave to an inhuman mage, she is about to begin a strange new life, filled with magic, fairies, and other beings of a fantastical nature.

Out of the 3 manga books I recently bought and read, this was for sure my favorite. I didn’t know anything going into it, but it captivated me from the very start.
I’ll have to say this is an extremely weird yet unique story.

The one thing I wasn’t a big fan of is Chise’s situation. We know from the synopsis she is a slave sold to a mage but I feel that a lot of books tend to go for that “damsel in distress saved by the monster that turns out to be kind, and oh, she is also the most powerful ever and she didn’t even know it”. I mean… It’s seen way too often and I would have preferred another approach, but as I said, I knew what I was getting into… so.
That said, Chise is not one of my fav characters. She doesn’t have much of anything going for her. She is kind and sweet and seems like a nice girl, sure, but she is incredibly submissive.

As for Magus, he is awesome. Creepy, dark, interesting and kind. He is a character I’m for sure interested in understanding more.

But the thing that captivated my heart was the world. It’s SO incredibly cool! Full of magic, fantastic creatures and worlds and I just absolutely loved it!!

I was in complete awe reading it and I can’t wait to see where the story is going!
