You must be strong enough to strike and strike and strike again without tiring.
The first lesson is to make yourself strong.
After the jaw-dropping revelation that Oak is the heir to Faerie, Jude must keep her younger brother safe. To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. Navigating the constantly shifting political alliances of Faerie would be difficult enough if Cardan were easy to control. But he does everything in his power to humiliate and undermine her even as his fascination with her remains undiminished.
When it becomes all too clear that someone close to Jude means to betray her, threatening her own life and the lives of everyone she loves, Jude must uncover the traitor and fight her own complicated feelings for Cardan to maintain control as a mortal in a Faerie world.
What did I just read?!?!?!?! This was the most intense book I’ve read this year and to be honest, it’s probably one of the most intense ya fantasy books I’ve read. Ever. I just love everything about it. It’s dark, intense, emotional and the writing is just incredible. It gripped me to no end and I just care so much for these characters and story!
The Wicked King starts off five months after the end of The Cruel Prince, when Jude tricked Cardan into obeying him for one year and one day to save her brother Oak. But while at the beginning one year may seem quite long, at the end it isn’t that much and yet, many things can go wrong in one year! And Jude is about to see that…
This book offers a turmoil of emotions, turns, twists, turns, twists, and… Did I mention twists and turns?! I’m not even kidding, there’s SO many unexpected moments in this book that will break your heart, leave you open-mouthed and make you want to scream at the world WHY?! This book is the best when it comes to the fae folk. It’s impossible to believe anything you read. Do not trust your brain reading this. Do not trust nice words and gestures! This book will turn your emotions inside out and leave you crying on the floor. It’s incredible how Holly Black wrote this book. I just totally fell for everything and everyone once again, and I can’t yet believe it. Everyone wears a mask in this book and yet it’s impossible to see behind. There are threats in all places…
Cardan might not be as big of a threat to Jude as he was in the first book, but he is one nonetheless, as well as Locke, adding up her father who she parted in wrong terms with, Cardan’s brother that wants the throne, Nicasia who wants Cardan, and her mother who wants, well, everything since she doesn’t trust Cardan to rule. So, you see, there’s more than enough threats for Jude and more than enough obstacles to her desires and hopes.
Also, in this book I learned how to hate Taryn more, so YEY! After reading the novella about her, I kind of fell slightly bad for her and felt that although I didn’t agree, I understood her a bit more, but now? Oh, I really don’t like this girl! As well as her very hateful boyfriend Locke. How I hate him!!! He makes me so mad! He didn’t change at all, as didn’t Nicasia. I hate them to the end of the world and I want Jude to take revenge for me.
But Cardan? Oh. I love him alright. It happened. I could not help but fall in love with him. He breaks me and yet I love him. I love seeing Jude with Cardan even tho they could kill each other for how much love-hate irradiates from them. It’s a very different relationship from what I normally read and I just… Loved it. I can’t wait to know more! Because this was NOT enough. I still don’t understand him, I still can’t trust him and yet I do, I feel so confused and heartbroken and it’s such an amazing drug…
As for Jude, I love her. She is everything I hoped she would be. She is fierce, dangerous, plotting every turn, trying her hardest, strong and yet soft-hearted when she least hopes to be. She is such an amazing character! I feel that I understand her much more in this book and I completely adore her. She is one of the strongest female characters and I can’t wait to see what she plots to do next.
This book was incredible and it forever broke me, especially with that end. Or should I say that horribly mean cliffhanger?! I have so many questions, so many hopes, so much anger inside me, and I have to wait one year? I feel desperate… But enough said, I HIGHLY recommend this series. It’s dark, twisty, emotional and full of amazing unreliable characters!
