Alessandra is tired of being overlooked, but she has a plan to gain power:

1) Woo the Shadow King.
2) Marry him.
3) Kill him and take his kingdom for herself.

No one knows the extent of the freshly crowned Shadow King’s power. Some say he can command the shadows that swirl around him to do his bidding. Others say they speak to him, whispering the thoughts of his enemies. Regardless, Alessandra knows what she deserves, and she’s going to do everything within her power to get it.

But Alessandra’s not the only one trying to kill the king. As attempts on his life are made, she finds herself trying to keep him alive long enough for him to make her his queen—all while struggling not to lose her heart. After all, who better for a Shadow King than a cunning, villainous queen?

The beginning gave me Cardan and Jude vibes if Jude had joined The Selection. There’s something really addicting about dark romance fantasies.

This book has such dark sexy writing! I had way too much fun reading!

The Shadows Between Us is a mystery dark fantasy with an awesome and ruthless MC. Alessandra is tough, cunning, and delightful to read about. She has but one goal – marry the Shadow King to then kill him and steal his throne to herself. But soon after being in the palace, she realizes she is not the only one trying to kill him. She will have to keep him alive long enough to become the Queen or her plan will fail!

I really enjoyed how much banter and betrayal this book has. It’s full of twists and turns and a lot of schemes that make your heart race.

I loved how Alessandra saw the world and how she wasn’t afraid of being herself. She was also really encouraging with her friends, and I loved to see that. Despite all that, she was actually a bit scary and quite a horrible person throughout the book, which only made me love her more! She knew what she wanted and wasn’t afraid to go get it! She was no damsel in distress, which I appreciate to no end! She was intelligent and always had a plan up her sleeve. Nothing seemed to break her.

As for the Shadow King, I’m obsessed. They are the perfect pair! He is as ambitious and cunning as her. Although a bit more closed and protective of himself, he was an amazing villain. He would do anything to protect himself, even closing himself to everyone and everything.

I really enjoyed following them around and discovering what the hell was going on. I also really enjoyed the world and only wished there was more of it! It’s simple but interesting and the part we get to know is well done.

I loved the start and the premise of the story. Although the middle was a bit slow and predictable… But the end made up for it, in my opinion.

This was overall a really fun and addicting read and, I’m definitely going to check out the next story The Darkness Within Us which seems to be Alessandra’s sister’s pov!

TW: death, grief, slut-shaming, violence
