Alice, a novelist, meets Felix, who works in a warehouse, and asks him if he’d like to travel to Rome with her. In Dublin, her best friend Eileen is getting over a break-up and slips back into flirting with Simon, a man she has known since childhood.

Alice, Felix, Eileen and Simon are still young – but life is catching up with them. They desire each other, they delude each other, they get together, they break apart. They worry about sex and friendship and the world they live in. Are they standing in the last lighted room before the darkness, bearing witness to something? Will they find a way to believe in a beautiful world?

In this book we follow Alice, Felix, Eileen, and Simon through the ups and downs of daily life. We see their friendships, family relationships and their romantic relationships; their desires and hopes; their breakdowns and happy moments. It’s raw, intriguing and just purely real.

The writing in this book is so distinct! I found it really different from what I generally read. Definitely enjoyed it tho, very intimate!

This story is incredibly crude, realistic and well, unlikable… The characters are very normal in a way, it’s not at all sugar coated or upgraded from what life really is like.

It touches subjects like relationships of all types, sex, love, class status, loneliness, religion, first-impressions, and how difficult it is to navigate normal life. It’s not like the novels we read, or like the ones our mc writes about, or the movies we see, it’s a lot more subdued and one has to try to find happiness in just that. The mundane and normality of everyday life.

It was also mentioned that Alice had had a breakdown, and I definitely know how that can be like, at times it also felt like navigating life with depression. On how it’s difficult to find happiness in life when everything is so… not glamorous. Especially being a writer like Alice, or an avid reader like myself. I wish life was more like what I read about for sure.

There’s also some more cultural and intellectual conversations in the middle. Like stress, celebrity culture and pandemic lockdown, which I found interesting.

I tend to both love characters that seem to achieve everything they wish and those that are mundane, flawed and raw, and this book is all about the latter.

This is my first book from the author and I have to say, it was a lot more interesting than I though it was going to be and a lot less romantic as well!

What did you think of it? Have you read it? Let’s discuss it in the comments below!
